This was the final Coffee and Connect of Season 2 (Season 3 to start this fall!). Patricia began by asking us to list some of our current feelings: tired, excited, relaxed, hopeful, anxious, stressed. These are all typical feelings at the end of a long work day. She then asked us where we felt these feelings physically- something we don’t often realize, even though we feel it every day. Some felt relaxed in their shoulders and lungs, some felt anxious in their stomachs, others felt stress in their head and neck. These sensations are not new to us, yet it was interesting to connect inner-emotion with physical feeling and truly understanding the effects that our emotions can have on our bodies.
Patricia then asked us to list our least favorite feelings: angry, sad, disappointed, underappreciated, overwhelmed. Then, we drew these feelings. At first, it was a little hard to know where to start, but soon the feelings took over and we had some great pictures. Some were optimistic and some were upset, but it was cathartic to be able to put a “face” to the feeling.
The final question posed to the group was “If your feelings in this picture could tell you anything, what would it be?” For those who were feeling stressed and overwhelmed, some of their pictures depicted chaos, but there was beauty to be found in the colors chosen, and a reassurance that things will be alright. While we don’t always want the “bad” feelings, it is important to acknowledge them and “sit with them” a while in order to learn from all of our feelings, and then appreciate the “good” ones even more.
